Wow, I guess Double or Bust should have a middle line for “break even.” I played tonight for almost two hours and was relatively card dead the entire time. I didn’t have a single pocket pair higher than 7s. For the first 90 minutes the table was very passive and it was hard to get any sort of pot built. I chipped away and got my stack from $25 up to my high water mark of $36.85. I then lost all my profit on a bad call with top pair, top kicker after a flush hit the turn. Part of the problem was the fact that my opponent in the hand is labeled as ULTRA AGGRESSIVE. I had seen him over play several hands and raising when a scare card hits the board is well within his bag of tricks. You can watch the hand here. You’ll notice that I limp from the button with A/Q, something I rarely do. My plan was to try to flop big against the UTG player and trap him for all his chips. It backfired.
Even though I didn’t have any pair higher than 7s, I did have 7s twice, 6s twice, 5s once, 4s once and 3s once. Of all those pocket pairs, I flopped one set. I had 6/6 in the BB and it was folded to the SB who limped in. I limped and we saw a flop of 10/8/6. He checked, I bet the size of the pot, he called. The turn was another 10. He checked, I bet 3/4s of the pot and he folded.
Those are the only two hands that stick out in my mind. Oh, I think I missed my opportunity to double up 10 minutes in to my session. I was in the BB with 7/5 off suit. 2 plays limped in and then the SB min-raised. While I hate the min-raise a lot, I decided to fold so that I wasn’t playing a crappy hand sandwiched in between a min-raiser and two limp/callers. The flop came out 5/5/Q and the SB bets out the size of the pot. Both limpers fold and the SB shows A/A. Something tells me that if he’s not smart enough to do more than min-raise from the SB with A/A, there is also no way in hell he’s laying down A/A on that board no matter how much I bet.
We’ll try again tomorrow.
